Microstructure multi-core optical fiber for sensing

  • 2025-09-25

Microstructured multi-core sensing optical fibers refer to optical fibers in which multiple optical cores are designed in the core area of the fiber, and specific microstructures are used to enhance their sensing capabilities. Compared with traditional single-core optical fibers, these fibers have significantly improved transmission efficiency and sensing ability. By regulating the propagation characteristics of light, microstructured multi-core sensing optical fibers can achieve sensitive detection of external environmental changes and have broad application prospects.

The structural design of microstructure multi-core sensing optical fibers is very unique, mainly reflected in the following aspects:

(1) Multi-core design: The optical fiber contains multiple optical fiber cores inside, which can simultaneously transmit optical signals, enhancing the bandwidth and efficiency of data transmission.
(2) Microstructure: The microstructure of optical fibers is usually formed through pores, micropores or specific material designs, and these microstructures can effectively control the path and mode of light propagation.
(3) Material selection: Microstructure multi-core optical fibers generally use high-purity quartz materials, which have excellent optical properties and environmental resistance, ensuring the stability of the optical fibers in various environments.

Application Prospects
The microstructure multi-core sensing optical fiber demonstrates excellent application potential in several fields, mainly including the following aspects:
1) Industrial Monitoring: In complex industrial environments, micro-structured multi-core sensing optical fibers can be utilized to monitor the operating status of equipment, enabling the timely acquisition of parameters such as temperature and pressure, thereby enhancing the operational safety and efficiency of the equipment.
2) Structural Health Monitoring: In the monitoring of infrastructure such as bridges and tunnels, micro-structured multi-core optical fibers can monitor the stress and displacement changes of the structure in real time, providing reliable data support and helping to prevent potential safety hazards.
3) Environmental Monitoring: The micro-structured multi-core sensing optical fiber can also be used for environmental monitoring such as water quality and air quality, enabling real-time acquisition of environmental parameters and providing data support for environmental protection.
4) Intelligent Transportation: In the intelligent transportation system, microstructured multi-core optical fibers can be utilized to monitor information such as road conditions and traffic flow, providing effective data support for traffic management.
Development Challenges
Although microstructured multi-core sensing optical fibers have broad application prospects, they still encounter some challenges in practical applications:
1) Manufacturing cost: The manufacturing process of microstructured multi-core optical fibers is relatively complex, resulting in high costs. This, to some extent, limits their widespread use in certain fields.
2) Technological maturity: Although microstructured multi-core optical fibers perform well in laboratory settings, further research is needed to improve their stability and reliability in practical applications.

3) Market Acceptance: As an emerging technology, the acceptance of microstructured multi-core sensing optical fibers in the market still requires time. Its widespread application needs more successful cases and market education.

4)Connecting loss: the multi-core fiber connection needs a Fan-in and Fan-out divice to connected with other comment device(single core). during the backbone network construction, it needs to spliced by specialty multi-core fusion splicer. Shinho S-22 multi-core fusion splicer is keeping helping users to get lower loss on multi-core fiber splicing.
